Salt Lake City, Utah – Up to 15 inches of snow could bury Utah’s mountain passes by Sunday evening, causing hazardous travel on routes like Mirror Lake Highway, Indian Canyon, and roads near Brian Head.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. MDT Sunday for the Wasatch Mountains, Western Uinta Mountains, and Southern and Central Mountain regions. Areas above 8,000 feet—including Alta, Brighton, Fish Lake, and the Tushar Range—can expect 5 to 10 inches of snow, with locally higher totals.
Drivers heading through high-elevation routes such as U.S. 6, I-80 through Parley’s Canyon, and SR-143 near Brian Head should prepare for slick conditions and possible delays. Snow began early Sunday and will intensify through the morning, shifting to showers in the afternoon. Locations favorable to northwest flow—like the upper Cottonwoods—may see the most persistent accumulation.
Travelers should slow down, use winter tires or chains where required, and check live road updates from UDOT at udottraffic.utah.gov.
Snow showers are expected to taper off by early evening, but elevated roads may remain icy overnight. Additional weather alerts could be issued if snow bands redevelop.
