New Mexico — A crisp, quiet start to Saturday across the northern mountains will soon give way to a winter wake-up call. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect from midnight tonight through Sunday night, warning of 3 to 8 inches of snow with higher totals above 11,000 feet across the Tusas, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

By early Sunday, heavy snow bands are expected to build along the spine of the northern ranges, making travel through mountain passes extremely difficult. Roadways near Chama, Taos, and Angel Fire could see slick conditions, blowing snow, and sharply reduced visibility. Forecasters advise residents and travelers to prepare now — allow extra travel time, carry emergency supplies, and check nmroads.com or 511 for live road updates.

This system marks New Mexico’s first significant mountain snow event of late November, setting the stage for a colder, more active pattern as Thanksgiving week approaches. The storm may be a preview of a stronger winter setup expected to develop across the western and central U.S. beginning November 25–December 3, when another surge of Arctic air could trigger widespread travel disruptions and snow across multiple states.
