Winter Weather Advisory: Snow Showers Expected Tonight Across Southeastern Kentucky

JACKSON, KY – The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of southeast Kentucky, effective Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, as snow showers move into the region.

Snow is expected to begin late Wednesday afternoon in the higher elevations of Harlan and Letcher Counties, spreading into lower valleys by evening. Additional counties under the advisory include Knox, Bell, Floyd, Knott, Perry, Clay, Leslie, and Pike, where light accumulations are also expected.

  • 🌨 Snowfall Totals: 1 to 2 inches common, with localized 2–4 inches possible above 2,000 feet, especially near Big Black Mountain.
  • ❄️ Timing: 3 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday for Harlan and Letcher; 7 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday elsewhere.
  • ⚠️ Impacts: Slick and snow-covered roads, particularly at higher elevations and during the Thursday morning commute.

Forecasters note that rain showers in the valleys will transition to snow by around 8 p.m. as temperatures drop below freezing.

Motorists should use extra caution, allow extra travel time, and check GoKY.ky.gov for the latest road conditions before traveling.
