Springfield, IL – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous road conditions across central Illinois early Wednesday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service. The advisory will remain in effect from 6 a.m. to noon CST on Feb. 5, covering cities including Springfield, Champaign, Decatur, and Danville.

According to the NWS Lincoln office, a light glaze of ice is expected to accumulate, particularly on roads, bridges, and overpasses. Slippery conditions could make travel hazardous during the morning commute.

Residents are advised to use caution on sidewalks, driveways, and outdoor steps, as ice buildup could increase the risk of slips and falls. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra travel time, and stay alert for slick spots, especially on untreated roads.

The freezing rain is expected to transition into drizzle by midday as temperatures slowly rise. However, lingering ice may continue to pose a risk in some areas.

For up-to-date road conditions, check Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) alerts before traveling.
