Greenville, SC – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of western North Carolina, with snow and high winds expected to impact the region starting Thursday afternoon. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
The advisory covers Avery, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey counties, with lower elevations expecting 1 to 2 inches of snow. Ridgetops could see 2 to 4 inches, and isolated higher locations may accumulate 4 to 6 inches. Wind gusts up to 50 mph could exacerbate the hazardous conditions, with potential for scattered power outages and tree damage.
For Haywood and Swain counties, areas above 3,500 feet are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, with 4 to 7 inches possible above 5,000 feet. Winds could gust up to 45 mph in these areas, leading to similar impacts on travel and power infrastructure.
Commuters are advised to exercise caution, particularly during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Officials recommend preparing for snow-covered roads and limited visibility.
Residents should monitor updates and take necessary precautions, including securing outdoor items and having emergency supplies ready in case of outages.
