GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG, SC – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of the North Carolina mountains, where snow and strong winds are expected from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
The advisory covers Avery, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties, including communities such as Banner Elk, Newland, Faust, and Burnsville.
- 🌨 Snow Amounts: Up to 4 inches of accumulation, mainly above 3,500 feet.
- 💨 Winds: Gusts up to 50–55 mph, creating blowing snow and the potential for power outages.
- 🕐 Timing: From 1 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday.
- ⚠️ Impacts: Slick, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, especially on mountain passes and during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.
Forecasters warn that heavy snow and strong winds could down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered outages. Travel across higher elevations, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, may become hazardous.
Motorists should slow down and use caution, particularly at night when temperatures drop further and snow begins to accumulate on roadways.
