Charlottesville, VA – A winter weather advisory is in effect for central and western Virginia and eastern West Virginia from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain could create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall may reach up to one inch before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain. Ice accumulations could reach one-tenth of an inch. Roads and sidewalks may become slick, making travel dangerous.
Precipitation will begin early Saturday, initially as snow before changing to sleet and freezing rain through the morning. Warmer temperatures in the evening will turn precipitation into rain.
Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility. Slowing down and allowing extra travel time is advised. Officials recommend checking updated road conditions by dialing 511.
Residents should be cautious on sidewalks and untreated surfaces. Freezing rain could cause power outages by accumulating on trees and power lines. Keep emergency supplies ready, including flashlights and extra batteries.
Conditions will improve Saturday night as temperatures rise, but roads may remain slick into Sunday morning.
