Portland, OR – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 5 a.m. Monday for the Oregon and South Washington Cascades, where heavy mountain snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, snow levels above 3,500 feet could see 6 to 10 inches of accumulation, with areas above 5,500 feet potentially receiving a foot or more. Wind gusts may reach 40 to 50 mph, particularly along exposed ridgetops and near heavier showers.
The advisory includes mountain areas such as Government Camp, Santiam Pass, Willamette Pass, and Mt. St. Helens, with travel impacts likely along U.S. 26, Highway 20, and Highway 58. Roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick or icy, especially overnight.
Motorists are urged to prepare for winter driving by carrying chains, blankets, food, and water, and to check travel updates before heading into higher elevations. Oregon travelers can visit TripCheck.com or dial 511 for the latest road conditions, while Washington drivers can find updates at wsdot.com/travel/real-time/map.
The weather service advises extra caution for anyone hiking or driving through mountain passes through Monday morning as conditions may change rapidly.
