Fargo, ND – Portions of Minnesota and North Dakota are under a Winter Weather Advisory today, as gusty winds and blowing snow create dangerous travel conditions.
The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for areas including Fargo, Grand Forks, and the Red River Valley, as well as cities like Thief River Falls and Detroit Lakes in Minnesota. Wind gusts as high as 55 mph are expected, significantly reducing visibility and causing slippery roads.
Commuters should anticipate challenging driving conditions along major routes, including I-94, I-29, and U.S. Highway 2. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time for travel, and check the latest road conditions by calling 511.
Temperatures will also drop sharply, with wind chills plunging to as low as -25°F in parts of central and northern North Dakota. In Minnesota, similar conditions are forecast, with icy roads likely to persist into the evening. Travelers should bundle up and prepare for potentially hazardous commutes.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring slightly calmer weather, with lighter winds and clearer skies. However, temperatures will remain cold, with highs in the teens and lows dipping into the single digits. By the weekend, both states can expect dry but frigid conditions, making proper winter gear essential for outdoor activities.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages due to strong winds. Those traveling for work or errands should carry an emergency kit, including blankets and a flashlight, in case of delays or breakdowns.
