Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to Northern and Central California beginning Tuesday evening, with hazardous conditions expected to persist through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), multiple regions, including the Sierra Nevada, Lassen County, and the Lake Tahoe area, could see significant snowfall. Accumulations are expected to range from 4 inches at lower elevations to over 4 feet in the highest peaks. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph, creating near-whiteout conditions and making travel extremely dangerous.
The heaviest snowfall is projected for Wednesday morning into early afternoon. Areas above 3,000 feet, including Shasta, Plumas, and Mono counties, will experience difficult travel, with road closures and chain requirements likely. In the Lake Tahoe region, snowfall between 2 to 3 feet is anticipated, while Yosemite National Park and the southern Sierra Nevada could see totals exceeding 4 feet.
Authorities warn that travel could be impossible at times, particularly in high-elevation passes. Caltrans advises motorists to check road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or dial 511 before traveling. Residents should prepare for possible power outages and hazardous conditions.
The NWS urges caution and recommends avoiding travel if possible during the storm. More updates will be provided as conditions develop.
