Buffalo, NY – A winter storm watch has been issued for parts of western and northern New York, with heavy lake-effect snow expected to bring over a foot of snow to some areas by Friday.
The National Weather Service reports that the storm will begin Wednesday afternoon and last through Friday evening. Counties under the watch include Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis. Winds gusting up to 35 mph could lead to blowing and drifting snow, making travel hazardous.
According to the NWS, the most persistent lake-effect snow bands will see totals exceeding 12 inches, with localized areas potentially receiving even more. Visibility will be severely reduced at times, and road conditions could change rapidly, especially during the morning and evening commutes later in the week.
Residents are urged to stay updated on forecasts and prepare for challenging travel conditions. Drivers should keep emergency supplies in their vehicles and avoid non-essential travel during the storm. The current winter weather advisory for Jefferson County, which involves freezing rain, will expire early Tuesday, but more significant impacts are expected with the incoming storm.
Stay tuned for updates as the storm approaches, and plan accordingly for potential delays and disruptions.
