Reno, NV – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions to the Sierra Nevada, prompting a Winter Storm Warning through Wednesday morning and a Winter Storm Watch for another system arriving Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, snowfall totals could reach 3 feet above 7,000 feet in the Greater Lake Tahoe area, with gusts up to 100 mph along the Sierra crest. Areas below 7,000 feet, including Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, and Incline Village, could see up to 18 inches of snow by Wednesday morning.
Mono County is also under a Winter Storm Warning, with expected snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet above 8,000 feet and winds up to 85 mph. Travel along Highway 395 may be particularly dangerous due to whiteout conditions.
Another winter storm is forecast to hit Thursday morning through late Thursday night, bringing additional heavy snow and strong winds. Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for road closures, power outages, and extreme conditions.
Officials advise carrying emergency supplies, avoiding unnecessary travel, and checking Caltrans or NDOT road conditions (511) before heading out.
