Susanville, CA – A powerful winter storm is blanketing parts of Northern California, with significant snowfall and strong winds forecast through late Tuesday across Lassen, Eastern Plumas, and Eastern Sierra counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday for elevations above 5,500 feet and west of U.S. Highway 395. Forecasters expect snow accumulations between 6 to 12 inches, with some areas at higher elevations receiving up to 20 inches. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph along ridges and up to 50 mph along wind-prone stretches of U.S. Highway 395.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially during Monday’s morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow could cause near-whiteout conditions and dangerously low visibility.

Residents in Susanville, Portola, Sierraville, and nearby mountain communities should delay nonessential travel and be prepared for power outages and road closures. Officials urge drivers to carry extra food, water, and flashlights in vehicles.

This warning replaces a previously issued Winter Weather Advisory and reflects the storm’s growing intensity. For the latest road conditions, travelers should call 511 or visit Caltrans QuickMap for real-time updates.
