Duluth, MN – Northern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin are facing hazardous winter weather as a powerful storm system continues to bring heavy snow, ice, and strong winds to the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for multiple counties, including Koochiching, St. Louis, Cook, Lake, and several others, until 7 PM CDT Wednesday. In some areas, snow accumulations could range from 5 to 17 inches, with winds gusting as high as 45 mph, leading to possible whiteout conditions.

Travel Alerts and Impacted Areas
Travel conditions are expected to be very difficult to impossible, particularly for Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Areas like Duluth, Ely, and Grand Marais could experience snow accumulations up to 12 inches, while higher elevations of the North Shore may receive up to 17 inches.

In addition to heavy snow, ice accumulation around a light glaze and widespread blowing snow could lead to dangerous road conditions. Local authorities urge residents to stay off the roads if possible and to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water.

Safety Tips and Road Information
Travelers are advised to check local road conditions via 511MN.org for Minnesota and 511WI.gov for Wisconsin. The storm’s powerful winds may also bring down tree branches, posing additional risks.

For ongoing weather updates, residents should monitor the National Weather Service and local authorities for further warnings.
