Elkhart, IN – Residents of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan should prepare for heavy snowfall and high winds as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 1 a.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service reports that lake effect snow could bring accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, with wind gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. The most significant impacts are expected in areas near Lake Michigan, where blowing snow could severely reduce visibility.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm began Wednesday evening and is expected to continue through Thursday night. Hazardous conditions may disrupt Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Strong winds also pose a risk of downed tree branches and power outages.

Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend keeping an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle. Road conditions can be monitored by dialing 511.

The combination of heavy snow and wind will create rapidly changing weather and road conditions. Stay updated on local forecasts and use caution when venturing out.
