Grand Junction, CO – Heavy snow and strong winds are expected to impact multiple Colorado mountain regions through early Wednesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM MDT Wednesday for the Elkhead and Park Mountains, Flat Tops, Gore and Elk Mountains, Grand and Battlement Mesas, and the West Elk and Sawatch Mountains. These areas could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
The combination of snowfall and strong winds is expected to create blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility. Road conditions could become snow-packed and icy, particularly along mountain passes near Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte, and Snowmass. Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility under one-half mile at times.
Officials urge travelers to exercise caution, slow down, and check Colorado road conditions by dialing 511. Those venturing into the affected regions should have emergency supplies on hand and avoid unnecessary travel if conditions worsen.
This storm system is expected to taper off by early Wednesday, though lingering snow showers may continue in higher elevations.
