Big Sky, MT – A winter storm warning is in effect for the Gallatin and Madison County Mountains, including Big Sky, from 3 a.m. Thursday until noon Friday. The National Weather Service forecasts significant snowfall, with accumulations of up to 6 inches below 7,000 feet and between 6 to 14 inches above that elevation. Wind gusts may reach up to 35 mph, further complicating travel and outdoor conditions.

Travelers should expect challenging conditions, especially in mountainous areas like Raynolds Pass, Targhee Pass, and West Yellowstone. Tire chains may be necessary on some roads, and those in the backcountry should be well-prepared for winter weather. Hunters in the Gallatin, Gravelly, and Madison Ranges, as well as the Tobacco Root Mountains, are advised to bring winter gear and prepare for potentially severe conditions.

If travel is essential, it is recommended to carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water, and to check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Montana Department of Transportation’s road report website.
