Albuquerque, NM – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northern New Mexico starting late Thursday, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to the Sangre de Cristo and Tusas Mountains, including Chama. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 9 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, snowfall totals will range between 5 to 10 inches, with localized accumulations of up to 15 inches on west-facing slopes. Winds could gust as high as 65 mph, creating whiteout conditions and making travel extremely hazardous.
Officials warn that visibility may drop below a quarter mile due to blowing snow, and roads may become impassable. Power outages are also a concern as the storm’s strong winds could damage trees and power lines. Residents in affected areas are urged to prepare for potentially blizzard-like conditions and ensure they have emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water.
If travel is necessary, authorities recommend carrying an emergency kit in vehicles. For updated road conditions, travelers can dial 511 or visit nmroads.com.
This winter storm could cause significant disruptions through Friday evening. Residents are advised to stay informed and exercise caution.
