Topeka, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to impact north-central Kansas, bringing potential blizzard conditions late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. Strong winds and blowing snow could make travel dangerous across several counties.
According to the National Weather Service, Cloud, Republic, Washington, and Marshall counties are under a Winter Storm Watch, with up to two inches of snow expected and wind gusts reaching 50 mph. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile due to falling and blowing snow, making road conditions treacherous.
Further south, Lincoln and Russell counties are also under a Winter Storm Watch, with gusts up to 60 mph and possible whiteout conditions. While snowfall amounts are expected to be lower, the strong winds could cause significant blowing snow, tree damage, and dangerous travel conditions.
Residents are advised to alter travel plans and prepare for extreme weather. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend carrying a winter storm kit, including blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, and other emergency supplies.
The storm is expected to move through the region by Wednesday evening, but hazardous conditions could persist due to lingering high winds and snow drifts. Motorists and residents should continue monitoring forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
