Marquette, MI – Winter will make its first real appearance across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend, as the coldest air of the season sweeps in, triggering lake effect snow showers and gusty northwest winds.
According to the US National Weather Service Marquette, snow showers will develop Friday evening as temperatures fall and rain transitions to snow. The lake effect will intensify through Saturday and Sunday, particularly in the north and northwest wind snow belts, where localized heavier accumulations are possible.
Daytime highs will only reach the 30s, with lows dipping into the teens and low 20s, especially inland. Along Lake Michigan, temperatures will stay slightly warmer, but conditions will remain blustery with reduced visibility in snow squalls.
The heaviest snow bands are most likely to set up across central and eastern Upper Michigan, though the exact placement will depend on wind direction and local conditions.
Residents are advised to plan for slick roads, bundle up, and allow extra time for travel this weekend, especially in typical snow belt areas like Marquette, Munising, and Newberry.
