Atlanta, GA – The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning drivers to stay alert for black ice and frozen bridges as winter temperatures dip below freezing across Georgia and the Southeast.
Black ice — a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that forms when rain or melted snow refreezes — can quickly turn roads treacherous, especially overnight and early in the morning. Bridges and overpasses are particularly prone to icing because cold air circulates above and below the structure, allowing them to freeze faster than regular roads.
“Even a small patch of ice can cause a major accident,” the NWS warned. “Always slow down before crossing bridges or overpasses and avoid sudden movements when roads are slick.”
The agency also reminds drivers that:
- Freezing isn’t uniform — shaded areas may stay icy while sunny spots thaw.
- Ice can linger into the morning even after temperatures rise.
- Avoid quick acceleration or braking on icy surfaces.
The message comes during Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Georgia, as forecasters encourage residents to plan ahead for cold-weather hazards.
Remember: “Ice or snow — take it slow!”
