Caribou, ME – Winter is about to make its presence known across northern New England, with Maine expected to take the brunt of the region’s first major snow event of the season beginning Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service, a strong cold front will push into the area midweek, sending temperatures tumbling and turning rain into snow across much of northern Maine. The transition is expected late Wednesday evening, continuing into Thursday with scattered snow showers and freezing rain possible.
Forecasters predict a steady round of wintry precipitation through the weekend, with another system likely early next week. Daytime highs will struggle to reach the 40s, while overnight lows drop well below freezing, increasing the risk of slick roads and early-season ice buildup.
Wind gusts up to 30 mph could accompany the cold front, making conditions feel even colder and potentially reducing visibility during periods of snowfall.
Drivers are urged to use caution and prepare for winter-like travel conditions, particularly in northern and elevated areas of Maine.
The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor local forecasts for updated snowfall totals and timing as the storm system develops.
