Winnipeg, MB – Residents in Winnipeg’s Kildonan Crossing neighborhood saw an increased police presence Tuesday night after officers arrested two youths wanted on outstanding warrants, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
According to police, General Patrol officers with the East District encountered two 15-year-old youths at approximately 8:54 p.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of Regent Avenue West. Officers recognized the pair during the interaction, and subsequent record checks confirmed both were breaching court-ordered conditions and were wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.
Police say an imitation Glock-style firearm was located on one of the youths during the arrest. No injuries were reported, and investigators have not indicated that the imitation firearm was used to threaten anyone during the incident.
A 15-year-old boy was charged with possession of a weapon, failure to comply with a condition of an undertaking, and an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with court conditions. He was detained in custody.
A 15-year-old girl was charged with failure to comply with a condition of a release order, along with multiple outstanding warrants for failing to comply with conditions of release. Police say she was also detained in custody.
Because the individuals involved are youths, police have not released their names, in accordance with Canadian youth justice laws.
The Winnipeg Police Service continues to remind the public that imitation firearms can pose serious safety risks, as they are often indistinguishable from real weapons during police encounters. Officers say these situations can escalate quickly and urge parents and guardians to speak with youth about the dangers and legal consequences associated with replica weapons.
Anyone with information related to this incident or ongoing criminal activity in the area is encouraged to contact the Winnipeg Police Service or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
