Winnipeg, MB – A police response in central Winnipeg on Wednesday evening has triggered an independent investigation after a man suffered serious injuries during an arrest attempt.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were called to a residence in the 900 block of College Avenue at approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to conduct a bail compliance check on a male bound by several court-ordered conditions related to pending criminal charges.
Police say the individual, a 35-year-old man, was found to be in breach of his release conditions. When officers attempted to arrest him, the man allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed himself.
Officers deployed a conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser, which police say allowed them to safely disarm and secure the man. Officers then immediately provided life-saving first aid until Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrived.
The man was transported to hospital by paramedics and admitted for treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Because the incident involved a serious injury, police say the Civilian Director of the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was notified, as required under The Police Services Act.
The IIU has now assumed responsibility for the investigation. The civilian-led agency is tasked with independently examining incidents involving police where serious injury, death, or firearm discharge occurs.
Winnipeg police confirmed they will not be providing further details and have directed all follow-up inquiries to the IIU while the investigation remains ongoing.
Residents in the area may have noticed a police presence during the evening hours as officers secured the scene and assisted emergency responders.
