Winnipeg, MB – A man is in police custody following an alleged taxi robbery and assault in Winnipeg’s Roslyn area Wednesday afternoon, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
According to police, West District General Patrol officers responded to a report of a taxi robbery on Wednesday, January 29, after a driver reported being assaulted by a passenger while transporting them to the 1–99 block of Nassau Street.
Investigators say the incident occurred at approximately 5:22 p.m., when the passenger allegedly threatened the driver with a weapon, stole personal property, and destroyed the taxi’s onboard camera. Police said the suspect continued to make threats while assaulting the driver before the victim was able to exit the vehicle. The suspect then allegedly drove away in the taxi.
The driver did not require medical attention.
Responding officers later located the stolen taxi near the intersection of River Avenue and Norquay Street, police said. The suspect was found seated in the driver’s seat and was described as uncooperative during his arrest.
According to police, the suspect showed signs of impairment, was in possession of alcohol, and refused to provide a breath sample. Officers also allege the suspect gave a false name and was found carrying another person’s identification.
Police identified the suspect as Chief Silas Keeper, 42, who has been charged with multiple offenses, including robbery, operation of a conveyance while impaired, failure or refusal to comply with a demand, identity fraud, possession of an identity document, and several counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, including warrant-related charges.
Keeper remains detained in custody as the investigation continues.
