Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg police are asking for the public’s help today after a deliberately set fire caused significant damage inside a Norwood West restaurant late Wednesday night.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded to reports of a suspicious fire at approximately 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, at a restaurant in the 1–99 block of St. Mary’s Road, between Marion and Horace streets. Members of the Major Crimes Unit were already patrolling nearby and arrived at the scene shortly after 10:00 p.m.

Investigators say a group of five adults — two women and three men — allegedly attended the restaurant, ordered food and alcoholic beverages, and remained inside for a period of time. When it came time to pay the bill, police believe a fire was deliberately set inside the business.

The fire caused significant property damage but was extinguished before emergency crews arrived. No injuries were reported, and all suspects fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

Due to the circumstances, investigators believe the fire was intentionally set as a diversion to help the group escape without paying.

Fire investigators with the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit have taken over the case and are now seeking public assistance in identifying one female suspect.

She is described as:

  • Indigenous or Métis
  • Approximately 20 to 30 years old
  • Medium build
  • Brown or red curly hair
  • Wearing a black tank top
  • Tattoo on the chest or breast area
