Winnipeg, Manitoba — An 18-year-old man faces multiple charges after a series of grocery store thefts across Winnipeg triggered a police investigation.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers with the Property Crime Unit began investigating in early January 2026 after a string of retail thefts at grocery stores across the city.

Investigators determined a man was allegedly responsible for several incidents involving stolen food items, primarily meat and chocolate products, from stores on Main Street and Mountain Avenue.

Police said the alleged thefts occurred on multiple dates between January and February 2026, including repeated incidents at a grocery store in the 2500 block of Main Street.

In several cases, the suspect allegedly entered the store, selected meat products worth between $100 and $680, and left without paying. In one incident on January 15, security stopped the suspect after he attempted to leave with about $300 in merchandise, though police say he later returned minutes afterward and allegedly stole approximately $100 in meat products.

Additional incidents involved alleged thefts of chocolate products valued at $622 and $100 from the same Main Street location.

All of the reported incidents were captured on the retailer’s security cameras and later reported to police. Authorities estimate the total financial loss exceeded $5,000.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed conduct of the investigation and identified a suspect, leading to an arrest on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Police said Keith Lyle Redhead, 18, has been charged with eight counts of Theft Under $5,000 and one count of Fail to Comply with a Release Order.

He was also arrested on the strength of four outstanding warrants for robbery, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and failing to attend court or comply with a release order, according to police.

Redhead was detained in custody.

Retail theft investigations can affect store security policies and prices, an issue often felt by students and young workers who rely on local grocery stores.
