A temporary encampment near the riverbank in Winnipeg has been dismantled after police allegedly uncovered a bicycle chop-shop containing dozens of stolen parts. Two men are facing charges after the bust.

According to Winnipeg Police Service, the Central Community Support Unit executed a search warrant Wednesday afternoon at an encampment in the 1-99 block of Gomez Street, following months of reports of suspected property crime in the Fort Douglas Park area. Investigators say the temporary structure was being used as a workshop.

Police reported seizing more than 230 items during the raid, including 50 bicycle frames, 77 tires, 53 rims, five complete wheels with rims, a gas generator, a lawn mower, a pressure washer and a wheelchair. Officers allege many of the items were stolen.

Two men, ages 39 and 57, were arrested at the site and charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000. A third person was also detained but later released without charges after police determined they were not involved. Both accused men were released on Undertakings while the investigation continues.

Police say investigations into thefts involving bicycles and other property remain ongoing, particularly around urban encampments. The Central Community Support Unit was launched to address community safety concerns, including suspected crime in public spaces.

Anyone with information regarding bicycle theft or suspicious activity in the Fort Douglas Park area is encouraged to contact Winnipeg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
