Winnipeg, Manitoba — A 17-year-old was arrested after a stolen vehicle pursuit in St. Boniface Wednesday morning, prompting a wider investigation.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, East District General Patrol officers arrested the youth shortly before 9 a.m. on March 11 following a brief pursuit connected to a stolen vehicle investigation under Project “Lancer.”
Police said officers first observed a stolen 2013 Nissan Rogue traveling eastbound on Elizabeth Road near Lagimodière Boulevard at about 8:45 a.m. Multiple units followed the vehicle as it traveled southbound on Lagimodière Boulevard and westbound onto Fermor Avenue.
During attempts to stop the vehicle, the Rogue allegedly rammed two police vehicles before officers deployed a deflation device. The vehicle fled but was later found heavily damaged and abandoned on Cypress Bay.
Officers arrested the youth on Gatineau Bay after a short foot pursuit and recovered a folding knife the suspect allegedly discarded nearby. Police reported no injuries during the incident.
Investigators with the Property Crime Unit and East District Community Support Unit later linked the youth to multiple reported vehicle thefts across southeast Winnipeg, including incidents dating back to December 2025.
Police allege the youth was connected to thefts involving several vehicles, including a 2021 Kia Forte, 2021 Ford Fusion, 2014 Toyota RAV4, and 2013 Nissan Rogue, along with other incidents involving stolen vehicles and attempted break-ins.
A search warrant executed at the suspect’s residence reportedly led officers to recover vehicle keys and clothing matching surveillance footage, according to police.
The youth now allegedly faces 68 charges, including 16 counts of theft of a motor vehicle, assaulting police officers with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and flight from police.
Leaving vehicles running unattended during cold weather remains a common factor in thefts, Winnipeg police said, warning residents to remove keys and secure vehicles even during short stops. The reminder may resonate with commuters and younger drivers navigating winter conditions.
