Winnipeg, MB – A late-night police pursuit in Winnipeg’s Talbot neighbourhood ended with the arrest of a 37-year-old man and the seizure of a prohibited firearm, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
According to police, officers from the East District Community Support Unit were patrolling the area around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday when they observed a vehicle speeding northbound on Gateway Road. Officers maintained a safe following distance as the driver allegedly attempted to evade police, prompting additional units to flood the area.
Police say the vehicle eventually stopped near the intersection of Molson Street and Norwich Avenue. The driver allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit, officers took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Investigators later confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen. During a search, police located a semi-automatic carbine rifle inside the vehicle, along with a loaded magazine. Authorities say the firearm is classified as restricted or prohibited.
The suspect was identified as Kyle Andrew Cathro, 37, of Winnipeg. According to police, Cathro was charged with multiple firearms- and property-related offences, including possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, careless storage of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a restricted or prohibited weapon contrary to a prohibition order, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Police say Cathro was detained in custody following the arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Winnipeg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
