Winnipeg, Manitoba – A man is in custody following a serious stabbing reported Saturday afternoon at an apartment complex in Winnipeg’s East District, prompting a Major Crimes investigation.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were called just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, to an apartment complex in the 1–99 block of Stadacona Street after reports of a stabbing inside a residential suite.
When officers arrived, they located a 27-year-old man suffering from multiple serious injuries. Police say the victim was treated at the scene and transported to hospital by ambulance, where he was listed in stable condition.
Investigators determined the victim and suspect were alone together inside the suite when an unprovoked assault allegedly occurred. According to police, the suspect punched the victim multiple times in the upper body before the incident escalated. The suspect allegedly produced a knife and slashed the victim before fleeing the scene.
Police were contacted immediately, and the Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation due to the severity of the injuries.
Just after 5:34 p.m., officers located and arrested the suspect outside in the 100 block of Henry Avenue, several blocks from the original scene.
Police have identified the suspect as Gabriel Joseph Andrew Linklater, 25, who has been charged with Aggravated Assault. He remains in custody.
No further suspects are being sought at this time. Investigators have not released information on what may have led up to the assault, and the investigation remains ongoing.
