Winnipeg, MB – A stolen vehicle investigation in Winnipeg ended with the arrest of a 16-year-old youth and the seizure of a loaded handgun Wednesday morning after a police pursuit and collision with a transit bus.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers from the K9 Unit attempted to stop a 2014 Mazda 3 GT around 10:30 a.m. Friday near Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street after confirming the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the day.
Police say the driver allegedly refused to stop and fled, continuing through a stop sign at Andrews Street and Selkirk Avenue, where the vehicle collided with the side of a Winnipeg Transit bus. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries reported as a result of the crash.
The youth allegedly ran from the heavily damaged vehicle but was quickly arrested after a short foot pursuit, police said.
During a search of the Mazda, officers located a loaded .45-calibre Glock handgun equipped with an extended magazine, according to police. Investigators also stated the firearm had obliterated serial numbers and was seized as evidence.
The Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation. The youth, who cannot be identified under Canadian law, faces multiple charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, flight while pursued by a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, and multiple firearm-related offenses, including possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition.
Police confirmed the youth remains in custody.
The incident occurred in Winnipeg’s North End, an area near the city’s core and a major transit corridor.
