Winnipeg, MB – A homicide investigation in Winnipeg’s North End has led to an arrest, following a fatal shooting reported earlier this month on Arlington Street.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded to a disturbance call just after 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at a residence in the 1300 block of Arlington Street. North District General Patrol officers arrived and located a man inside the home who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and later identified the victim as 37-year-old Caleb Joshua Johnston of Winnipeg.

Police say that on Monday, December 15, investigators arrested 32-year-old Hugh Keith Switzer in connection with the homicide. Switzer has been charged with Second-Degree Murder, along with several firearm-related offenses.

The additional charges include:

  • Possession of a Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition (three counts)
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm (two counts)

Authorities allege the charges stem from the same incident that led to Johnston’s death. Switzer remains in police custody and is awaiting further court proceedings. Investigators have not released details about a possible motive or the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Winnipeg police continue to urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Tips can be provided directly to the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219. Anonymous information may also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Residents in the North End and surrounding Winnipeg neighborhoods are encouraged to report any information that could assist investigators as the case moves through the justice system.
