Winnipeg, MB – A teen was sprayed with bear spray in what police are calling an “unprovoked assault” at a Portage Avenue mall on Monday evening.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers from the West District, along with Tactical Support and K9 units, responded around 6:00 p.m. on October 21, 2025, to the 1400 block of Portage Avenue after reports of a bear spray attack inside the mall.
Police say the male victim, believed to be in his early teens, suffered irritation from the spray and was treated by paramedics on scene. Authorities noted that additional bystanders in the area may have also been exposed but were not identified.
Investigators determined the assault appeared random. The suspect reportedly approached the victim, said something to him, then sprayed him before fleeing. Security personnel quickly alerted police. The victim told investigators he did not know the suspect.
The suspect is described as a male wearing a black hoodie tied over his head, blue jeans, and black running shoes.
