Winnipeg, MB – A man was hospitalized and later arrested after allegedly attempting to set himself on fire inside a downtown Winnipeg condominium Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded around 4:15 p.m. on October 15, 2025, to a report of a fire in the 100 block of Bannatyne Avenue. Authorities said the man, described as being in his thirties and experiencing mental distress, allegedly poured gasoline on himself and in the building lobby.

Residents were safely evacuated as a precaution. Police said the building’s sprinkler system quickly activated, extinguishing the flames before they spread. No other injuries were reported.

The man was initially taken to hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable. Once medically cleared, officers arrested him.

He faces charges of Arson with Disregard for Human Life and three counts of Failing to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order, according to police. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
