Winnipeg, MB – Drivers across Winnipeg are facing heightened impaired driving enforcement this holiday season as police release new results from ongoing Checkstop operations aimed at keeping roads safe through Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers stopped 1,183 vehicles between December 15 and 21, 2025, as part of Week 3 of the 2025 Holiday Season Checkstop Program. During that period, 36 drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Police reported that two drivers were criminally charged for impaired operation after registering blood alcohol concentrations of 80 mg% or higher. An additional 12 drivers received Immediate Roadside Prohibitions after failing an Approved Screening Device test. One driver failed a drug screening test, testing positive on an Approved Drug Screening Equipment (ADSE) device.
Officers also issued 21 WARN results, which indicate alcohol consumption below the criminal threshold but still subject to administrative penalties.
Under Manitoba’s impaired driving laws, every driver stopped at a Checkstop is required to provide a breath sample using an Approved Screening Device. Drug screening equipment is also deployed to detect cannabis-related impairment, police said.
The Winnipeg Police Service emphasized that enforcement will continue through December and New Year’s Eve, a period historically associated with increased impaired driving incidents.
Police are urging anyone planning to drink alcohol or consume cannabis to arrange a safe ride home. Suggested alternatives include a designated driver, taxi or ride-share services such as Uber or Lyft, Winnipeg Transit, or Operation Red Nose, which operates during the holiday season.
The 2025 Festive Season Checkstop Program is supported by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
