Winnetka, CA – Drivers and residents in the western San Fernando Valley are being urged to avoid part of Sherman Way this morning after a major structure fire caused a partial building collapse and prompted a large-scale emergency response.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to a commercial structure fire in the 20200 block of West Sherman Way in Winnetka, located in Los Angeles County. More than 120 firefighters responded to the scene.

LAFD officials said the bulk of the fire has been extinguished, primarily at the rear of the building. However, the front of the structure sustained a partial collapse, and pockets of active fire remain. Firefighters are continuing operations to safely access and extinguish those remaining hot spots.

A large adjacent apartment building was successfully defended from the flames and did not require an evacuation. Residents were advised to shelter in place, and no damage to the apartment complex was reported.

One adult female patient, described by fire officials as being in her 30s to 40s, was transported from the scene in fair condition. No additional injuries have been reported.

Because this is expected to be an extended-duration incident, officials are advising drivers to avoid West Sherman Way between Winnetka Avenue and Oso Avenue while crews remain on scene. Traffic delays are expected throughout the morning.

LAFD Public Information Officer Captain Erik Scott is on scene providing media updates. Fire officials say additional information will be released as conditions change.
