Winnebago County, WI – A decades-old cold case may soon be solved thanks to modern DNA technology, as investigators work to identify “Wolf River Joanne Doe,” whose remains were found in 1985.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, two boys snorkeling in the Wolf River discovered the woman’s skull more than 40 years ago. Despite national efforts, her identity has remained unknown.

Detective Lt. Chris Braman recently unveiled new Snapshot DNA analysis images predicting the woman’s likely eye, hair, and skin color — along with an age-progressed portrait showing how she may have appeared in life.

“The technology and science of today is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was in 1985,” the department said. “Identification of ‘Joanne’ is the first crucial step.”
