Rockford, IL – Rockford residents are learning more today about a Tuesday night traffic stop that turned into a foot chase, multiple juvenile arrests, recovered firearms, and injuries to a Rockford Police K-9. The incident unfolded around 7:58 p.m. Wednesday near Gilbert Avenue and Rockwell Street.

According to the Rockford Police Department, SCOPE officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying four juveniles. The driver allegedly fled, crashed into a snowbank, and three 17-year-old males ran from the scene while a 16-year-old female was detained without incident.

Officers say a 17-year-old male was quickly located and arrested. Two handguns—one loaded with an extended magazine—were recovered, along with 10 THC vape pens. K-9 units were deployed to track the remaining juveniles.

During the search, police say two pit bulls escaped from a nearby yard on Liberty Drive and attacked a Rockford Police K-9. Officers attempted to separate the dogs, but both were ultimately shot and died from their injuries. The injured police dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, underwent surgery, and is expected to recover.

After reviewing the case, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized multiple charges, including aggravated resisting, weapons offenses, possession of ammunition, fleeing to elude, resisting arrest, and possession with intent to deliver cannabis. All individuals are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
