Winnebago County, IL Burglary Arrests: Two Men Taken Into Custody at Former School

Rockford, IL – Police in Rockford arrested two men after responding to a burglary alarm early this week at the former Our Lady of Sacred Heart Academy on 11th Street.

According to the Rockford Police Department, officers arrived at 3218 11th Street after receiving an alarm call and found two individuals at the scene. Officers allegedly located 68-year-old Murray Smith inside the building and 38-year-old Joseph Trejo nearby. Both were taken into custody without reported incident.

Following a review by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office, Smith was charged with burglary, while Trejo faces a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. Police said both men were lodged in the county jail.

Authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges or arrests may occur. Officials emphasized that all charges are accusations and that both individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
