Omaha, NE – A blast of extreme cold is set to grip Nebraska and parts of Iowa, with wind chills dropping as low as -36°F. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 9 p.m. Monday to noon Tuesday, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, dangerously cold wind chills will affect areas including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, and Council Bluffs. Wind chills as low as -35°F could cause frostbite in just 10 minutes.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats and gloves, and limit time outdoors. Pets should be kept inside, and portable heaters must be used safely to prevent fire hazards. Authorities also advise checking on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those without adequate heating.
The extreme cold may also impact travel, with icy conditions possible. Temperatures are expected to improve by Thursday afternoon.
