Amarillo, TX — A strong cold front is sweeping across the Texas Panhandle today, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and powerful northerly winds. According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the front moved in early this morning and will continue racing southward through midday.

High temperatures will occur early in the day—some areas may have already reached their peak readings—before colder air steadily pours into the region. By afternoon, temperatures will fall significantly, with wind chill values dipping into the 20s and 30s for much of the area.

The biggest impact from today’s weather will be the wind. Northerly gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected, especially from late morning through mid-afternoon. These strong winds may cause loose outdoor items to blow around and could make driving hazardous, particularly on east–west highways and in open rural areas.

Conditions should improve after sunset, when winds are forecast to rapidly diminish.

Tonight will bring a cold start to Sunday, with lows falling into the teens and lower 20s across the Panhandle. Areas such as Dalhart, Guymon, and Boise City may dip even lower, making it one of the colder nights of the season so far.

The National Weather Service advises residents to secure outdoor decorations and lightweight objects, use extra caution if driving high-profile vehicles, and dress in layers to protect against the chilly wind.

While no winter precipitation is expected with this front, the sudden temperature drop combined with wind gusts will make today feel much colder than recent days.
