Winamac, Indiana — Slick spots were reported Friday morning along U.S. 421 in Pulaski County after overnight temperatures dropped sharply, creating icy conditions for early commuters.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation Northwest District, temperatures fell rapidly overnight following much warmer conditions Thursday, when highs reached near 50 degrees. Gusty winds overnight pushed wind chills down to around minus 1 degree by early Friday, increasing the risk of refreeze on previously wet pavement.
INDOT officials said snowplow and treatment crews have been active across the district since midnight, applying salt and other treatments to state routes as needed. A dash camera image captured around 4:52 a.m. Friday shows generally clear pavement on U.S. 421, though officials cautioned that isolated slick spots may still develop, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.
Despite overall road conditions appearing stable, drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time during the Friday morning commute. Sudden temperature drops combined with wind can cause ice to form quickly and unevenly, catching motorists off guard.
The department noted that strong winds contributed to the rapid cooling, making it feel significantly colder than actual air temperatures. Officials reminded drivers that road surfaces can freeze even when precipitation is no longer falling.
INDOT encouraged motorists to check current road conditions before traveling by visiting 511in.org or using the INDOT TrafficWise mobile app, which provides live traffic cameras, including snowplow dash cameras.
Commuters, students, and early-morning workers traveling Friday should remain alert for changing conditions, especially in rural areas where treatment may be less frequent.
