Wilmington, Ohio – Drivers across Wilmington are facing hazardous travel conditions Monday as strong west winds combine with very cold air, making travel difficult on open roadways. Gusts strong enough to buffet vehicles are expected throughout the day, increasing the risk of lane drift, sudden braking, and reduced control—especially for high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, sustained winds around 15 to 20 mph with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph are expected at times today. The strongest gusts are anticipated late morning through the afternoon, coinciding with frigid temperatures that can quickly sap traction and driver reaction time.
Roadways oriented north to south, including U.S. 68, State Route 73, and U.S. 42, are most susceptible to crosswinds. Drivers of semis, vans, and vehicles towing trailers are urged to use extra caution, reduce speed, and keep both hands firmly on the wheel. Blowing debris and brief reductions in visibility are also possible in open rural areas.
Cold air remains locked in place through tonight, keeping wind chills uncomfortable even as winds slowly ease. Motorists are encouraged to monitor conditions, delay unnecessary travel if possible, and prepare for continued cold through midweek. Additional advisories could be issued if winds or impacts increase.
