Wilmington, NC – Believe it or not, parts of the Carolinas really did see measurable snow in 2025 — and not just a dusting. According to new data from the National Weather Service in Wilmington, multiple cities from the coast to inland areas recorded 2 to 5 inches of snow during the January 21–22 winter storm.
For coastal residents, it was a rare sight. North Myrtle Beach, SC, unofficially logged 5 inches, while Wilmington, NC, saw 2.6 inches — enough to blanket beaches and briefly shut down roads. Farther inland, Florence picked up 2.3 inches and Lumberton reported 2 inches, marking the region’s snowiest stretch in several years.
Meteorologists say the event was fueled by a strong Arctic front and Gulf moisture that combined perfectly for coastal snowfall — something that happens only once every few winters.
While the snow melted quickly, it was followed by an intense summer: Wilmington reached 99°F in June, and Florence topped out at 103°F in July, highlighting a year of sharp weather contrasts.
Still, locals are likely to remember 2025 as the year the beach turned white.
