Ohio — The cold hits hard before sunrise, biting exposed skin and stiffening everything it touches. Frost coats cars and sidewalks as an Arctic blast tightens its grip across southwest and central Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m. Monday. Temperatures near 5 degrees combine with steady west winds to push wind chills between -5 and -15 degrees. At these levels, frostbite can occur in minutes without proper protection.

Travel conditions are hazardous early today. Black ice may be present on bridges, overpasses, and lightly traveled roads, even where pavement appears dry. Drivers should reduce speed and increase following distance, especially along U.S. 68, I-71, and rural routes. Walking surfaces may also be slick due to refreezing moisture.

The extreme cold lingers through tonight. Lows fall near 1 degree, with wind chills staying well below zero. Monday brings limited improvement. Sunshine helps temperatures climb into the low 20s, though the air remains sharply cold. Monday night dips again into the mid-teens.

Tuesday marks the first meaningful change. Highs rise into the mid-30s, easing stress on pipes, vehicles, and people. Winds turn lighter, improving outdoor and travel conditions. Even so, shaded areas may stay icy where melting refreezes after sunset.

Midweek brings a gradual moderation. By Wednesday, highs approach 40 degrees, and clouds increase. Rain chances arrive late Wednesday night into Thursday, with highs climbing into the 50s. While snow is not expected locally, lingering cold ground could still create slick spots early during any precipitation.

With Christmas travel beginning this week, this cold snap is a serious reminder that winter has arrived. Dress in layers, check vehicles, and keep emergency kits ready.
