Wilmington, N.C. – Minor coastal flooding is expected along the lower Cape Fear River this weekend, with water levels rising during the afternoon high tide cycle and creating problems for riverfront areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, flooding will likely continue each afternoon from Wilmington southward through at least Friday, with the greatest impacts expected near low-lying neighborhoods, docks, and roadways adjacent to the river.
While flooding is anticipated to remain minor, drivers in downtown Wilmington should watch for standing water near Water Street and Riverfront Park during the peak tide hours. Areas farther south toward Carolina Beach could also experience brief water coverage on access roads and low-lying intersections.
The flooding risk comes as otherwise hot and mostly dry conditions hold steady across the region. Daytime highs will climb near 90 degrees through early next week, though scattered thunderstorms may bring temporary relief on Saturday and again Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to avoid parking in flood-prone riverfront areas and to monitor water levels each afternoon.
Flooding alerts remain in place for the Cape Fear River through early next week, with the National Weather Service cautioning that additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
