Wilmington, N.C. – Drivers and residents across the Carolinas could face more flooding today as the National Weather Service extends a Flood Watch through this afternoon. Streets in low-lying areas, especially near rivers and creeks, may become impassable as additional heavy rain falls on already saturated ground.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Wilmington and Charleston, bands of showers and thunderstorms will continue to move inland from the coast through late afternoon. Urban flooding remains a major concern in cities like Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah, and Hinesville, where poor drainage could quickly overwhelm streets.

Authorities warn that rainfall totals may exceed 4 inches in some locations before the system moves offshore. Emergency officials advise avoiding non-essential travel, keeping mobile devices charged, and never attempting to drive through flooded roads.

The Flood Watch covers parts of southeast North Carolina, northeast South Carolina, and southeast Georgia, including Brunswick, New Hanover, Horry, Georgetown, Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper, Chatham, and Liberty counties.

Threats are expected to ease later this evening, but additional advisories may be issued if storms redevelop overnight.
