Wilmington, N.C. – Minor flooding could cause delays in downtown Wilmington Tuesday evening as the Cape Fear River rises with high tide, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory until 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, up to one foot of water is possible in low-lying areas near the river, including sections of Water Street and Battleship Road. The advisory warns drivers to expect ponding and potential closures along riverfront roads during peak tide levels.
The flooding risk is tied to evening tide cycles, which are expected to remain elevated through midweek. While Tuesday night poses the greatest risk, forecasters caution that additional flooding could occur during late afternoon and evening tides into Thursday.
Emergency officials urge drivers not to bypass barricades or attempt to cross water of unknown depth. Travel may be slowed in affected zones, and residents in flood-prone properties should prepare for minor inundation.
Flood concerns are expected to diminish later in the week, though another advisory may be issued if tides remain above normal.
