North Carolina — Cold air presses in from the north this morning as the Cape Fear River sits still and steel-gray. The quiet won’t last. Snow, wind, and dangerous cold are lining up fast for coastal southeastern North Carolina.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Wilmington and surrounding counties from early Saturday through Sunday afternoon. Snow totals between 5 and 8 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. For a coastal region, that’s a high-impact event. Travel could become very difficult as snow intensifies and winds increase.

Snow begins late tonight with a brief wintry mix possible, then turns to steady snow by Saturday morning. By Saturday night, heavier snow bands may develop, accompanied by gusty north winds. Blowing snow could sharply reduce visibility, especially along open stretches of US-17, I-140, and coastal bridges.

An Extreme Cold Watch follows close behind from Saturday evening through Monday morning. Wind chills may drop to near zero. Frostbite and hypothermia are real risks without proper protection. Any snow that melts during daylight hours could refreeze quickly after sunset, creating icy roads and sidewalks.

Residents should plan now. Avoid unnecessary travel this weekend. Secure outdoor items before winds increase. Protect pipes, check heating systems, and bring pets indoors. If you must drive, keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.

This storm is part of a broader Arctic blast gripping the eastern U.S. With the Great Lakes nearly 50 percent frozen, cold air remains locked in, keeping winter threats active into early February before gradual moderation midweek.
